Reopening Strategy

Why are we allowed to re-open?

As we are all aware, we were considered a non-essential service and ordered to close due to the current COVID-19 global pandemic.  We had proactively made the decision to close our doors on March 16th, ahead of the Emergency Order. On June 16, 2020, the Emergency Order was amended to allow for facilities which are members of a sport organization (recognized by the Ministry of Heritage, Sport, Tourism and Culture) to re-open under the guidance of that Provincial Sport Organization (aka PSO)

Hayabusa Academy is currently a member of two PSO's (Muay Thai Ontario (MTO) & Ontario Jiu Jitsu Association (OJA)).

ONTARIO REGULATION 82/20 (SCHEDULE 2, SECTION 13, SUBSECTION 5 AND 6) AS OF JUNE 16TH, 2020.

(5)  FACILITIES FOR INDOOR SPORTS AND RECREATIONAL FITNESS ACTIVITIES THAT COMPLY WITH THE CONDITIONS SET OUT IN SUBSECTION (6) MAY OPEN FOR THE PURPOSE OF BEING USED BY ONE OR MORE OF THE FOLLOWING ORGANIZATIONS, LEAGUES OR CLUBS TO TRAIN AMATEUR OR PROFESSIONAL ATHLETES OR TO RUN AMATEUR OR PROFESSIONAL ATHLETIC COMPETITIONS:

  1. A NATIONAL SPORT ORGANIZATION FUNDED BY SPORT CANADA OR A MEMBER CLUB OF SUCH AN ORGANIZATION.

  2. A PROVINCIAL SPORT OR MULTI-SPORT ORGANIZATION RECOGNIZED BY THE MINISTRY OF HERITAGE, SPORT, TOURISM AND CULTURE INDUSTRIES OR A MEMBER CLUB OF SUCH AN ORGANIZATION.

  3. A PROFESSIONAL SPORT LEAGUE OR A MEMBER CLUB OF SUCH A LEAGUE.

  4. ANY NATIONAL SPORT ORGANIZATION THAT IS A MEMBER OF, OR IS RECOGNIZED BY, EITHER THE CANADIAN OLYMPIC COMMITTEE OR THE CANADIAN PARALYMPIC COMMITTEE OR A MEMBER CLUB OF SUCH AN ORGANIZATION.

(6)  THE CONDITIONS REFERRED TO IN SUBSECTION (5) ARE THE FOLLOWING:

  • THE ONLY PERSONS PERMITTED TO USE THE FACILITY ARE ATHLETES WHO ARE MEMBERS OF AN ORGANIZATION, LEAGUE OR CLUB DESCRIBED IN SUBSECTION (5).

What will the training be like now?

We want to stress that we sincerely hope that these are only temporary measures!  We are hoping that we can get back to regular safe training as soon as possible.

The current guidelines clearly state that all training must be done through physical distancing (6 feet apart).  We feel that the most effective way to re-engage our current members with the gym is through our striking / fitness kickboxing program, which falls under the Provincial Sport Organization of Muay Thai Ontario.

Until restrictions relax, our training schedule will revolve around our Fitness Kickboxing / Muay Thai Conditioning program.  Once restrictions have relaxed enough to allow for non physical distanced training, we will reintroduce our Jiu Jitsu program.  How long will this take?  We aren't sure.  Maybe 2 weeks?  Maybe 2 months?  Maybe more?  We just don't know.

What's the timetable going to be like?

Based on the survey our members completed, we've put together a "temporary" timetable.  You can check it out here.  This timetable is our best attempt at trying to make the majority of people happy.  Please keep in mind, it's temporary.  If it's not working, we may need to tweak it.  As restrictions on physical distancing relax, we may add in some of our other classes, with the goal of returning our timetable back to "normal" as soon as possible.

I'm a Fitness Kickboxing member.  What about me??

You are going to be right at home!  We will be offering 30 minute, bag work, physically distanced classes throughout the day.  We have offered these classes before under the name "STRIKE 30".

I'm a Muay Thai student.  What about me??

You are also going to be right at home!  The STRIKE 30 format will give you the opportunity to work independently on the bag and get a great Muay Thai style sweat on!

I'm a Jiu Jitsu student.  What about me??

This might be a bit of a different experience for you.  Punching and Kicking is not something that we practice in our Jiu Jitsu classes, so hitting the bag will be all about getting back in shape.  We invite you to participate!  We encourage you to participate!  We look forward to you participating!

Unfortunately, we are not able to lend any equipment, so you would need to bring your own gloves (and hand wraps) or purchase gloves and wraps from us.

I'm not a member yet, but I'd like to be.  What about me??

At this moment (at least for the next couple weeks), we won't be taking on any new members.  The reason is that we don't want to get into a situation where we take on a new member, and then find that we may have to close again due to a second wave of the virus.  Additionally, we do not yet have a sense of how full our classes will be with our existing members.  And because we have to run our classes at limited capacity, we want to make sure that we have room for all of our existing members who have been supporting us through these difficult times.

We will keep all potential new members up to date as to when we are taking on new memberships.  If you would like us to add your name to the list of people we contact regarding new memberships, please email us at: info@hayabusa-academy.com

What about my membership?  How's that going to work?

At this moment, while we are only offering strike 30 classes, our rates will be based on fitness kickboxing membership rates.  (Approximately $79/month).  For students returning that are on Jiu Jitsu or Muay Thai memberships, we will be pro-rating your membership to reflect this temporary schedule.

What if I'm not ready to come back to training?

You can absolutely leave your membership on HOLD and wait until you are ready to return.  No pressure at all!

Class sizes & Zen Planner

We will be running classes at limited capacity (10 people per class).  It is absolutely imperative that you reserve your classes through the Zen Planner interface (either the mobile App or the desktop portal).  We will be working very hard this week to ensure that we build a schedule which will allow people access to classes.  This is why it is so important to us that you please complete the survey as soon as possible.   The ability to perform contact tracing is crucial at this point, and this is why the Zen Planner app is so important.  Reserving classes and checking in to your classes allows us to prove to the Ministry of Health that we are following the guidelines around contact tracing. When you log into your Zen Planner account, we will be asking people to sign a COVID-19 related waiver.  This is a one-time waiver, and you will not be able to reserve a class until the waiver has been signed. You can download the Zen Planner app for iOS here. You can download the Zen Planner app for Android here. You can learn more about Zen Planner here. If you need help with Zen Planner, or need a password reset, please email us at: info@hayabusa-academy.com

This seems complicated and stressful!!

Yep!  It sure does!  But we are going to try very hard to make it as stress-less as possible.  We will try our best to make it fair for everyone, and accommodate people as much as we can.  It might not be perfect, but we hope you will bear with us as we figure it out.  And try to remember that it's TEMPORARY, and we hope we can start returning to normal as soon as possible.
